This special purpose machine is designed to carry out the following tests on small scissors and small shears:

The scissors are secured within a fully adjustable operating frame, which is pneumatically powered to open and close them. No side force is exerted to the bown thereby not influencing cutting performance. By utilising a range of various test materials, from very easy to very difficult, the relative cutting performances of scissors can be obtained. This then provides a cutting performance figure suitable for comparisons between products.
The unit can be set to open and close the scissors continuously to an adjustable pre-determined number of cycles. The operation can be performed by simply opening and closing the scissors, or by actually cutting paper fed from a roll on a special feed unit available as an optional extra and not shown in the above photograph. This generates wear on the scissors, which can then be easily assessed by repeating the initial cutting performance assessment.
In addition, an optional facility can be added to the machine to evaluate the closing/cutting forces. This is carried out by a small load sensor fitted within the operating mechanism and the data being processed by an interface card within a PC (PC not supplied). A simple program analyses this data. This facility is particularly useful for control of setting of high performance scissors such as hairdresser's shears etc.
